The Georgia Gwinnett College women’s and men’s soccer teams had a successful week in preparation for hosting the AII postseason tournament later this month.

The GGC women started the week by taking a 1-0 double-overtime win at home against West Georgia. Mary Vernetti knocked in the game winner, moving the Grizzlies to 13-3-1 on the year.

The women have one regular season game remaining. Monday, November 4 is Senior Night for Coach Martelli’s team, where they’ll take on Emmanuel College.

The men’s team saw the women win their 13th game of the season 1-0 in double-overtime and said, “We can do that too.” So they did.

Saturday was Senior Day for the men and senior Johan Sanchez’s first career GGC goal was a timely one as it gave the Grizzlies a (you guessed it) 1-0 win in double-overtime over SCAD-Savannah. The game was GGC’s third consecutive 1-0 victory, and completed a stellar 13-4 regular season for Coach DeCou’s team.

Building on what have been fantastic seasons for the Grizzlies, both the men and women are looking forward to hosting the Association of Independent Institutions post-season tournament. The tournament will be held in Lawrenceville November 15 and 16. The winner of the AII tournament will get an invitation to the NAIA national championship tourney.

The final pairings and game times will be announced later this week, but right now it looks like the GGC men’s team will play at 1 pm on the 15th, and the GGC women will kick off at 7 pm. Stay tuned to 10Soccer for more details as they become available.
