With a win and a tie, the Kennesaw State University women’s soccer team earned 4 points in their final two home games of the season at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The Owls are on the verge of clinching a spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference championship tournament, but they’re aiming for more.

On Friday, Elizabeth Johnson drilled a shot into the upper 90 just before halftime for her first career goal, giving KSU a 1-0 victory over Stetson. Two days later, on a beautiful fall Sunday in Kennesaw, the Owls put in a strong defensive effort against conference leading Florida Gulf Coast University. Led by junior defender Iyani Hughes and freshman goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant, KSU shut out the Eagles and got a well-deserved point from the tie.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, Kennesaw State is tied for third place in the Atlantic Sun conference standings, just 2 points out of second place. The Owls are also 6 points ahead of seventh place East Tennessee State University.

The top six teams in the conference standings will play in the A-Sun Championship tournament, so just 1 point from their final two games will assure KSU of an invitation. But the Owls are still gunning for that second place position, which comes with a first round bye in the Championship.

After Sunday’s game, Head Coach Rob King said his team is focused on finishing strong. “We want to be on a roll going into the conference tournament. It’d be great if we could get a couple of more wins under our belt. It’s always tough when you go on the road and down into Florida late into the season. We’d like to go down there and put ourselves in a position where we get a bye.”

Kennesaw State concludes their regular season with road games against Jacksonville and North Florida.
